Do yourselves a favor and check out this post on Deadspin, where they announce that they'll be trimming the ranks of their commenters. So much on display there, from the typically flouncy behavior of the commenters as they decide to quit before they get fired, to the whole "this isn't just a web site, it's a community" line of thinking, to the kneejerk bashing of the Deadspin editors/Gawker media/etc.
The Deadspin commenters have always had an inflated vision of their own importance to the site -- an attitude that was repeatedly enabled by the site's editors. The comment threads over there have long since devolved into a swamp of weakly offensive non-sequiters. Like open mic night for nerds who always wanted to be jocks. So it's kind of funny to see everyone over there realize all at once that their awesomely hilarious Gay-Rod jokes haven't made them quite as indispensable as they thought.

MARTIN LAWRENCE REALLY LET HIMSELF GO
This post is exactly correct.
[insert sexist or homophobic comment in the spirit of Deadspin]
testify!
it's all very funny to watch from afar.
Spot on.
Comments are only approved by a comedic gate keeper now. They really know how to slice up the spirit of blogs and what made Deadspin popular. Shitting on your customers is a common behavior trait of Monopolies.
Has anyone actually pinpointed the exact moment that Deadspin started sucking? (Preferably, in slow motion VHS playback a la Ralph Wiggum's heart breaking when Lisa rejects him).
OK, maybe "sucking" is too strong, but three years ago, I visited the site several times/day. Now, I stop by once, maybe every other day.
hey, maybe if the editing hadnt gone way downhill, and the writing gone way downhill, i could see blaming the commenters ofr the website's downward spiral
hey, aj: it's not us, it's you
The comments at Deadspin are a vast wasteland of unfunny. Good riddance.
The site went to shit after Will Leitch left. He was a smarmy bastard who stammered his way through embarrassing interview after embarrassing interview, but he could write and write well and gave the site its voice. Even Daulerio -- who I enjoyed when Will was his boss -- couldn't save Deadspin from the suck after that.
It seems this post has struck a chord with Deadspin followers out there on the internets. There's a whole disgruntled mass of y'all out there, huh? Almost makes me want to start my own sports blog to capitalize on the runoff.
(Note: I will not be starting my own sports blog. For one thing, all the Deadspin refugees would probably find there was too much coverage shirtless tennis dudes for their liking. Ah well.)
