You Know, Not To Look a Gift Booting in the Mouth...

It's great that hate-spewing radio cretin Michael Savage got dumped from the L.A. market and all, but I have to say it bugs me that nothing was done about this guy as he delivered diatribe after bigoted diatribe against liberals, gays, immigrants, and other conservative punching bags, but now that he's gone after autistic kids, he's beyond the pale. Obviously, the guy's an asshole, and what he said about autism was ridiculous and cruel, but the man's been ridiculous and cruel for a long time -- where was all the outrage then?

It reminds me of how everybody put up with Fred Phelps and his cult of inbred monsters, but when he started picketing soldiers' funerals instead of fags' funerals, THEN people started paying attention.

On the one hand, it's nice that everybody can come together and agree now that these two men are among the lowest scum on the planet. But it also serves as a reminder that, no matter how far we've come with marriage rights and representation in the media and anti-discrimination laws, we've still got a ways to go. Because we're still way, WAY down the ladder of people this country gives a shit about. There are soldiers, there are autistic kids, there are a whole lot of other rungs, and then there's us. Looks like we'll have to keep speaking up for ourselves.

He was fired the first time (2003) for referring to a gay caller as a sodomite and telling him to, ''get AIDS and die''

I think what made this one different is that he misjudged his audience. The people who listen to him want to hear him say vile things about gays, liberals, etc., because they sort of agree with him (either overtly or privately). But he seems to have been honestly deceived into believing that autism is a lifestyle choice or character flaw, rather than an actual medical condition that affects families across the political spectrum. I think he got in trouble this time because he pissed off even people who would have defended him for all the other things you note.
